This stencil of a graceful , outstretched handwriting was key in a cave on an Indonesian island . And now we know that it ’s more than 39,900 year old . That make it the oldest picture in the world , at least so far , and render that humans in Asia developed symbolic expression at the same meter as world in Europe .

Though the discovery of these paintings is n’t new , the method that scientists used to date them are . Bethany Hubbardreports in Discover :

Maxime Aubert and colleague dated the creations by analyzing mineral deposits found on top of the painting . These minerals imprint calcite nodules called coralloid speleothems , also known as “ cave Zea mays everta ” due to their bulbous shape . The cave popcorn contains trace amounts of the chemical element atomic number 92 .
Using a small electric automobile saw the research worker compile 19 samples from 14 individual motive , comprise of 12 hand stencil and two figurative drawings . By measure the radioactive disintegration of uranium in the calcite above and below the pigment level , scientists were capable to determine the minimum and maximum ages of the art .
And what ’s really brilliant is that this determination depict that artwork was come out all over the world , in distant community , at roughly the same sentence . Previously , the oldest known painting were in Europe , which had given ascent to the idea that perhaps art was conduct in that domain . But we now have evidence that this idea is false .

compose Aubert and colleaguesin their paper , publish this calendar week in Nature :
We show that rock candy artistic production traditions on this Indonesian island are at least compatible in age with the honest-to-goodness European art . The other dated image from Maros , with a minimum long time of 39.9 kyr , is now the oldest known paw stencil in the world . In addition , a house painting of a babiroussa ( ‘ pig - deer ’ ) made at least 35.4 kyr ago is among the other date figurative depicting worldwide , if not the earliest one . Among the implications , it can now be demonstrated that humans were producing rock art by ~40 kyr ago at opposite ends of the Pleistocene Eurasiatic humanity .
Something fall out to humans roughly 40 thousand long time ago , some evolutionary and cultural development , that tolerate us to start convey ourselves symbolically . It ’s extraordinary to imagine it arising in disconnected human communities throughout the cosmos .
