Germain Lussier , io9 : One of the things I really wish about Frozen Empire is how so much of it crop because of everything you already earn in Ghostbusters : Afterlife . It made me wonder , what in this movie came out of developing or brainstorming Afterlife ? Were there ideas you had then that but could n’t correspond in and you held for a possible 2d moving-picture show ?

Gil Kenan : We definitely want to set up the idea of the lookup for nursing home for our new characters , the Spenglers , and obviously Gary Grooberson . And that hunting began with their breakdown at the first of Afterlife and the idea that perchance this farmhouse would be a way to solve a problem — a pragmatic problem — for Callie of , where do we ground this family that ’s research for something to cling to , some sentience of permanence ? So we had already kind of begin through that physical process of developing that theme , thinking about the firehouse as a possible goal for this home that would solve a problem that was in motivation of solving and that they needed . Something to anchor to , in the same means that Ghostbusters fans were sort of clamor for that income tax return to the fire station . That was a cognitive process that happened organically through the writing of Afterlife and it feel like a really natural setup for how this film could commence .
io9 : But there ’s always a danger that you do n’t get to make another one , right ? And plain , you always hope you get to do a million of them . But how do you bed what to contain back ? This movie has so much in it that the fan are going to love it
Kenan : [ express joy ] You ’re like “ It does n’t seem like there could be anything held back ! ”

io9 : No , it feels like a salutary balance . I ’m just wondering , how much do you have to restrain yourself ? How much do you say , “ I have to get this in now , just in case ” ?
Kenan : There were definitely elements that we made sort of prudent choices about because this is a big movie . It ’s a big write up and a lot of characters to be balancing throughout the film . And so I think it ’s an expansive narration . It felt like that was something we had to do because we ’re bringing the story back to New York City . It ’s a immense canvas . You require to populate up to the scope of this place and fill it with sprightliness that feel like they ’re worthy . And there were things we sort of had as instincts — like this idea of spirit - loaded objects . That was one we catch really excited about in the conversations that Jason [ Reitman ] and I had after Afterlife and before writing this one . Those were conceptual excitements that we had that we know we would place pins [ in ] to develop further . And we emphatically have some of those that we are defy in our pocket , if we do get to make more of these .
io9 : awe-inspiring . Now , plain , a movie call for a good story , good characters . But , I was also , again , very emotional that this dug into so much other hardcore Ghostbusters stuff . Like we touch on on the bequest , we touch on the bigger spiritual entailment of spectre , and then there are progress of the technology . Was it important to you guys to disturb on the kind of lower-ranking thing in addition to the story ? state me a little scrap about developing those things .

Kenan : That ’s the richness of this universe , right ? First of all , you ’ve got to call up back , this is now a 40 - year tradition of storytelling . You have to imagine that the cause it has staying might for us as fans , I ’m let in myself in that number , is because when you catch those first couple of films — and I gauge Afterlife as well ? Even though I had a manus in it , I still look on it as a fan — you imagine that there is a sort of inner life story beyond just the characters . There ’s an inner lifespan to the world of ghostbusting . They ’re in a world where a proton battalion can be built . you may sort of generalise in other instruction . And that prospect ’s really electrifying , actually .
It ’s sort of what make the idea of Ghostbusters existing at all so compelling . It ’s such a simple hook that Dan Aykroyd had all those years ago . But it ’s so rich because it suggests that you’re able to use sort of homespun , modern tools to tap into the unimaginable . And so , yeah , exploring that in every management in this film felt like it was n’t just a demand , it felt like it was an deed of joy .
So every section — I have to tell you , I ’ve never experience make for on a film where departments would make out up and tar ideas just out of gauze-like honey for the motion picture . They all wanted to do bring that was not only in the best service of the story we ’re distinguish , but that somehow match into the larger continuum of these films . io9 : That ’s so cool . I love that . I also love that this movie just drops us in on the action . They ’re going at it , they ’re Ghostbusters , but there ’s obviously some story missing , of like them entrust Oklahoma , moving to New York , break the firehouse . Was any of that shot or in the script ?
Kenan : We made a critical pick as author to leap forward two years in time . We in reality had a shot that we considered doing at the end of hereafter and never snap , that showed the family Subaru driving on the main road out of Oklahoma with a tow vehicle behind it covered in a tarpaulin . And that tarp was flap and you see sort of Ecto-1 behind it . But then , of course , we filmed that beautiful finale with Ernie Hudson ’s Winston Zeddemore character bringing the Ecto-1 into the firehouse . That was our way of solicit it into the event that Frozen Empire was going to be delving into .

io9 : Okay corking . Now , Wikipedia seems to think that , after the end credit scene in Afterlife , Dana [ Sigourney Weaver ] and Peter [ Bill Murray ] are married . Can you clear up ? Are they really married ?
Kenan : If they are , it ’s tidings to me .
io9 : Okay , what about Dana ’s boy Oscar ? There was conjecture he might appear in one of these movies .
Kenan : We love Oscar . We have an idea of where he is . It ’s potential he ’ll show up in a future installment , but we do n’t have that worked out yet .
io9 : And what about the indistinguishability of Callie ’s mom and Phoebe and Trevor ’s pop ? Is that purposely being held back , or is just something that does n’t weigh ?
Kenan : You know , it ’s part of their story , but so many of us have chemical element that help to shape who we are , that do n’t really matter in our day - to - 24-hour interval life . They are the component that put us together but are not our current report or our current dramatic event . It ’s the same way with Phoebe ’s dad and Callie ’s mom . They are important edifice blocks to those type , but they do n’t cypher in their day - to - day lifespan . That ’s something that I think a pile of audiences , for better or worse , can touch on to . You do it , sometimes your home is who ’s around you powerful now and the mass who handle about you , the people who support you , the people who make a home for you , that ’s what count going forward . That ’s how we approach the piece of writing of these characters .
io9 : Awesome . And this is my last matter , and I bid it was n’t because I have a billion other question , but you obviously love to dwell a movie with great actors . But I found it interesting and exciting that specifically in Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt , they ’re worker who were maybe on fan cast inclination of likely new Ghostbuster teams . So how much did you reckon at that , and was any part of casting them a lead at perchance , just mayhap , they ’re part of this universe now going forrad ?
Kenan : front , we ’re simple guy rope . We just want the very , very best comedian in the creation to unite this franchise . And it was the same with James Acaster as with Kumail and with Patton . These guy are assassin , and they bring their A - plot to this plastic film . And Kumail specifically , I mean , they ’re all phenomenal performer but Kumail was a part of the conversation of the building of this film . From very early stages we had an idea about who his character was going to be . He came in to have conversations with us as we were writing the script . And we really shape this arc for him , with him . So , yeah , these are , as you could see from this film , we do n’t throw characters lightly in this franchise [ laughs ] . So , I go for we ’re lucky enough to make more . And I would n’t weigh any of them out .
