To celebrate four decades ofFootloose, Lori Singer is sharing her idea for a sequel to the classic ‘80s film.
In the 1984 film, Singer, 66, starred as rebellious, small-town teen Ariel Moore alongsideKevin Bacon, who played Ren McCormack, a big-city boy who helps her convince her town and reverend father (John Lithgow) to overturn its dancing ban.
Now, in honor of the movie’s 40th anniversary, the actress reveals to PEOPLE that she has been holding on to a concept for the next chapter of theFootloosestory for years.
“I don’t know if Kevin even remembers this, but I actually had sort of an idea where Ariel grows up and goes to New York where she wanted to be, and Kevin stays there,” Singer tells PEOPLE. “Kevin stays in the town, and he becomes a bigger deal in the town. That’s where he becomes the town lawyer or whatever.”

“She comes back because her father’s sick,” Singer tells PEOPLE. “I mean, I just played with that idea years ago and we were talking about it and joking.”
“But that was just something for us to meet on and talk about and laugh about,” she adds.
When it actually comes down to it, however, Singer isn’t sure she wants a follow-up film — and neither is Bacon, 65.

Answering a fan question about a potential sequel on hisSix Degrees with Kevin Baconpodcast earlier this month, the actor said,“Never say never, [but] I think it would be a disaster.”
Similarly, Singer says that the original, Herb Ross–directed film — which was already remade in 2011 — and its message were “pure,” and continuing the story may change that.
“I don’t know, it was so pure for what it is that I kind of agree with Kevin,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s very pure in what it expresses, but you never know.”

Elsewhere in her chat with PEOPLE, Singer recalled what it was like meeting Bacon for the movie for the first time — “electric.”
“It’s just one of those things when you have somebody like Herb Ross as a director, and he’s been with so many great actors … he was already very established, so he knew what he was doing,” she adds.
