NASA ’s New Horizons spacecraft take hundreds of images of Pluto this summer , and we ’ve been getting them all back in one of the most splendid data trash dump astro nerds have ever borne witnesser to . But for some of us , still image just are n’t enough . We require to fly over Pluto , too , damnit !

Thankfully , NASA understands this . The vivification below , created by Stuart Robbins of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder , stitch together the latest Pluto trope as of September 11th into a soar overpass of the tiny , weird , beautiful dwarf world that captured our hearts this summer .

We start our circuit over the jagged Norgay Montes , an trash mountain orbit comparable to the Rockies , at a peak of about 120 international nautical mile . We journey northerly across the mysteriously textured plain stitch of Sputnik Planum ( the bright surface area to the left ) and Cthulhu Regio ( the darker , cratered region to the rightfield ) , all the while gaining ALT . lastly , we turn east and clear altitude tight , soaring to a height of over 1,500 miles .

“ The construct of this animation arose from a desire to showcase the most recent imagery received from the spacecraft and the immense salmagundi of terrain types that we see on Pluto , ” Robbinswritesin a blog spot . “ I can just wait until we get even better imagery – up to seven time better pixel scale – that ’s still to issue forth of quality area of the surface and to see what new surprises Pluto has in store . ”

We can scarce wait either — but alas , waiting is the name of the secret plan when you ’re downlinking datum over the solar organisation ’s risky dial up connection . The New Horizons spacecraft start itsmain datum downlink sooner this month , and it ’ll continue sending information home until August 2016 . By that gunpoint , New Horizons will hopefully be well on its way to the Kuiper Belt , where it ’ll remain unpacking the mysteries of the cold , dark , distant reaches of our solar system .
