McG made one truly great movie — Charlie ’s Angels is a masterpiece , one I ’ll defend with my dying breath . And after watching The A - Team , I was reminded that Hollywood could still take some lesson from McG on making nostalgia smut .

Every type of trash movie theater is strike and miss , but nostalgia porn has the lowest success rate of almost any subgenre . Just look at how many forgettable , stinking movies have been made base on old television show and other bits of ethnic detritus . For every stylish , fun outing like the first Charlie ’s Angels , there are tons of motion picture like lose In Space , The A Team , Thunderbirds , The Avengers ( the Steed / Emma Peel one ) … and oh yeah , the dreadful Charlie ’s Angels : Full Throttle .

( Of of course , it helps a lot to have Sam Rockwell in a major role , as Iron Man 2 and so many other movies have try out . Just imagine if Sam Rockwell had fiddle Picard ’s unaccountably bald untried clone . )

Even if they were n’t out - and - out drollery , they had a large VD of the silly hardwired into them . It was a different era in pop culture , and a certain spirit level of silliness was equation for the track , especially on television .
How do you turn one of these ego - consciously ludicrous shows into a movie ? The common scheme seems to be to camp down it up , and to care for it like a bit of a joke , with the hammy acting and plots that do n’t put up up to a cursory examination .
But Charlie ’s Angels hire the braver , smarter path — it ’s an unlimited funniness , in which the type are prize but they laugh at the situation .
