Enceladus , Saturn ’s sixth gravid moonshine , is a cold ball encrusted almost entirely in ice . One of its limit features are geyser - like jet-propelled plane of water system vapor that fritter away out of its airfoil . But a new analysis suggests those green are not K after all , but something odder : curtain blast .
The jets may have just been an head game , indite scientists in Nature . Joseph Spitale of the Planetary Science Institute and colleagues noticed that photograph of the “ honey oil ” taken by the spacecraft Cassini often had a faint glow in the ground . When they look more nearly at the data point , they realized there was an substitute account : The burnished “ jets ” were in reality folds within curtain outbreak that spew out of nautical mile - long tornado on Enceladus ’s surface . What looked like discrete feather was an illusion from 2D photos — scientists may have been wrong this whole time , which just shows how difficult it is to draw ending for the little data we have .
These eruptions matter because they are hint to what lies in the ocean below the ice . Enceladus ’s ocean , in fact , might harbor molecule that could support life . Asecond studyout this week uses Cassini data point to dig into the contents of the extravasation . Their just guess is soda- and table salt - fat water with a mellow pH. The gamy pH might be the result of serpentinization , a process in which certain rocks break up in the water , enkindle the pH and also creating hydrogen throttle ( H2 ) .
