Back in 1977 , Paramount began production on a raw live - legal action Star Trek serial calledStar Trek : Phase II . The idea was eventually quarrel in favor of making The Motion Picture . ButMike Minorhad already complete construct graphics for a revamped DoI for the go-ahead .

A few of the handwriting for Phase II were make over for The Next Generation and thePhase 2 series of fan films , but a lot of what Minor created for the original Phase II exists only in his concept art . Above is the Enterprise ’s nosepiece ( which would be used for The Motion Picture ) . Below are the rec room , captain ’s quarters , applied science , and what looks like a cargo hold . ( word of advice : some aspects of these designs are very 70s ) .
