Myfavorite second ofCaptain America : Brave New Worldlasted about two seconds . In one of the flick ’s good big engagement , Captain America and Falcon are attempting to stop two battler jet from round the militariesof multiple countries . thing blow up , political machine guns are fired , andat one gunpoint Captain Americastops a missile by hinge on it like a surfboard . It happens in a flash but , at that moment , I realize what the film I was watchinghad been missing : something , anything , unique and fun .
Captain America : Brave New Worldis the quaternary filmabout the nominal mantle , and the first with Sam Wilson ( Anthony Mackie ) handle the cuticle . That passing of the torch happened in a movie release six years ago ( 2019’sAvengers : Endgame ) and was search witha little extradepth and care in a video show released four twelvemonth ago ( 2021’sThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier ) , both of which come to fruition in a story that ’s a direct subsequence to a moving-picture show free 17 year ago ( 2008’sThe Incredible Hulk ) . In that flick , the corpse of a heavenly being was entrust behind on Earth , and now Ross finds himself trying to broker a treaty that would evenhandedly circularize the island ’s resources . The main resource , adamantium , is really new in the Marvel Cinematic Universe , but unless you get it on its ultimate applications from the comics ( or thelast Marvel film ) , it ’s never adequately explicate why it ’s so important . They acknowledge you know , so you just kind of go with it .

Weaving in and out of the progress of that treaty is Captain America , often joined by his friend Joaquin Torres ( Danny Ramirez ) who is slowly slipping into Wilson ’s honest-to-goodness persona as The Falcon . They steal a secret package . Their friend is framed for murder . They fall out together in this plush Captain America - themed flat and , finally , they expose a plot of land concocted by Samuel Sterns ( Tim Blake Nelson ) who has a beef cattle with Ross date all the agency back to the second MCU motion-picture show ever . He ’s a cool - ish scoundrel but is largely maintain in the shadow until the end of the film , undercutting some of that impact .
If all of this sounds a little stale , kind of dumb , and too complicated , that ’s because it is . Captain America : Brave New Worldgoes back and forth from long , drawn - out tale dumps , the episodic exposition dump , and mostly pointless action set opus that do petty to get ahead the patch . Often they sense added out of responsibility , just to fill a few minutes until the characters can overly excuse the – at last – kind of simple plot of ground for the 20th time . This pattern repeats , all conduct to a scene we fuck is coming because it ’s on every single while of marketing out there : Ross becoming a cherry-red Hulk . That the movie treats it like a magnanimous reveal , one that ’s teased from the very origin of the movie , but that it ’s literally on the poster as you take the air into the theater is another perfect example ofBrave New World‘s failures . The whole thing is craft with this moment being the Brobdingnagian , epic , surprising , Marvel climax , but there ’s zero suspense , and it end up looking and feeling almost exactly like every other Hulk scene in late Marvel movies . It just falls savorless .
A few thing do n’t shine flat , though . Riding a projectile like a surfboard for two seconds is one . More importantly , the plaster bandage is another . Anthony Mackie fully becomes Captain America here , come up to the function he ’s been work towards since 2014 ’s Captain America : The Winter Soldier . While ostensibly everything materialize around Mackie fails to conjure up any emotions or guarantee much attention , his charisma and confidence fighting against that , a superheroic feat if ever there was one . Ford mostly shines too , but he ’s Harrison Ford – so as long as he ’s holler his lines with even an iota of energy , he ’s great . Marvel newcomer Shira Haas plays Ruth Bat - Seraph , a former Black Widow turned Ross ’s capitulum of security , and though the character hasthe most unclear arcin the film , she ’s incredibly becharm to watch . Ramirez balance well with Mackie , offering at least a clue of humour , and supporting turn from Blake Nelson and an alas pointless Giancarlo Esposito work because each almost seems to know they ’re not in a enceinte motion picture .

Which would be perfect if the movie itself was mindful of that , but it is not . Starting with a unique , stylized “ Marvel Studios ” logo , to the bold decision to just call the picture “ Brave New World ” ( sans “ Captain America ” ) at the beginning , theatre director Julius Onah thinks he ’s at the helm of some dodgy , important , seventies political thriller . Or , at the very least , a film skinny toCaptain America : The Winter Soldier . That ’s not the slip . Brave New Worldhas no idea what it need to be , no idea what it want to say , and a level without any significant dramatics . Even the handful of scene that have some nerve or excitement get quick get drowned out by outside exposition or unconvincingly half - hearted type need .
There are a few crumbs for Marvel Cinematic Universe devotee spread throughout , including one scene at the very end of the credits , but none of it – include the introduction of adamantium and its obvious , funnies - drive implication for the future – ever adds up to makeCaptain America : Brave New Worldwhat it wants to be : an important , memorable addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe . Mackie might be a worthy heir to Chris Evans , butBrave New Worldis a bottom - grade Marvel movie with a snooze - worthy secret plan and blue emotional stakes .
