The U.S. government should n’t break up Facebook because that would n’t address the real problems that people look in the age of social media , according to CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg , a man who is currently worth an estimated $ 71.5 billion exactly because the societal medium company is so large .
Zuckerberg appeared at the Aspen Ideas Festival yesterday for an audience with Harvard Law School professor Cass Sunstein where he lay out his case against the politicians like Elizabeth Warren who say that tech giant like Facebook are too large . Sunstein mentioned to Zuckerberg that one of the Facebook beginner ’s friends had of late call for the company to be break up into multiple entities , but Zuck was n’t possess it .
“ I do n’t agree with that one , ” Zuckerberg said to laughter in the crowd .

“ Look , I think there are major social issues , right ? ” Zuck continued . “ I mean that election integrity is a really vital one , removing harmful content and managing that is important , we talked about that . concealment is important , and of path ensuring innovation and competition and research is important too . ”
“ The question that I think we have to grapple with is that break dance up these company would n’t make any of those problem well , ” Zuckerberg enounce . “ Right ? So the ability to work on election or subject system … We have an ability , now because we ’re a successful company and we ’re big , to be able to go build the systems that I cogitate are unprecedented . ”

“ The systems , in many cases , are more advanced than any one a raft of regime have , ” Zuckerberg carry on , without explaining on the dot what he meant by that . “ And we can make that once , and we can have it apply to Facebook , and Instagram , and WhatsApp , and Messenger . ”
The only problem with Zuckerberg ’s argument ? Facebook is pretty bad at deploying systems that help figure out today ’s problems . The only thing Facebook seems to be good at is produce public relation back event that make it look like it ’s doing something . And it ’s a lot easy to set up a “ War Room ” with the great unwashed gaze at screen than it is to really plow thing like election interference by foreign government activity . Especially when you do n’t even let journalist talk to anyone in yourso - shout out warfare way .
“ I can get why saying that you want to relegate up the party feels gracious , good ? ” Zuckerberg enounce afterwards . “ It ’s like there are issues … let ’s just take a big power hammer and go do it , but I just think the world is that we want to be … . we want to make certain the thing that we do actually address the problems . ”

Zuckerberg defended Facebook ’s gobbling up of competition avail like Instagram and WhatsApp , arguing that his acquisition have actually increased competition . Facebook corrupt Instagram for $ 1 billion in 2012 and WhatsApp for $ 19 billion in 2014 .
“ Yes , some mergers can be speculative for innovation . These were n’t , ” Zuckerberg said while talk about his acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp specifically . “ I think , it would be very hard to make the case that any kind of innovation or competition in the broader ecosystem was decreased because of the piece of work and the innovation that we ’ve brought to carry on this . ”
The entire conversation from the Aspen Ideas Festival is available onYouTube . But if that sounds too tedious for you , allow for me to advise another Zuckerberg picture that ’s much moreinteresting .
