The trailer opens with a crack of Dani ( Blu Hunt ) waking up to an inexplicable rain of roue which , melodramatic as it is , make sentiency give that this movie ’s meant to be scary — and canonically , Dani ’s fundamental power is to create psychic manifestation of masses ’s dreams ( bloodcurdling or otherwise ) . It ’s indecipherable whose blood is falling onto her hands in what appear to be an X - gene powered pipe dream chronological sequence , but you could imagine that what she ’s seeing here is boding monish her of the risk that she and the other New Mutants are all in .

As part of their “ treatment ” at Dr. Cecilia Reyes ’ ( Alice Braga ) facility , the New Mutants are getting the group therapy they all urgently require . While the kids are a bit reluctant to explain precisely how their powers have made their lives more hard , we see that Rahne Sinclair ( Maisie Williams ) is all too willing to partake a news report about her first shift into a wolf - like beast .

Before they translate how their power officiate , both Sam Guthrie ( Charlie Heaton ) and Roberto da Costa ( Henry Zaga ) end up hating themselves for causing crushing trauma to the the great unwashed confining to them , and it ’s all very difficult for them to talk about . But unlike her compeer , Illyana Rasputin ( Anya Taylor - Joy ) seems well aware of the demonic nature of her mutant powers , and she ’s quite hunky-dory with the fact that she ’s murdered more than a few hoi polloi .

All of the New Mutants are lawfully learning something because of the sentence they spend with Reyes , but Dani soon realizes that none of them are as free as the physician would have them recollect . Though the hospital they ’re staying in may seem normal , there ’s a force field surrounding it that Dani stumbled upon , and Illyana ’s like “ yeah , girl . We ’re ensnare . Catch up . ”

Insignificant as it might seem , the preview feature a twain of shots of the research readiness Reyes is working out of . Considering how complicated and tricky Illyana ’s powers are in Marvel ’s comics , you would n’t expect to see her full - on manifesting her Soulsword onscreen so apace , and yet here we are , and the implication is that she wo n’t just be a bare teleporter here .

What ’s most interesting about this whole trailer is that it ’s setting up both Dani and Illyana to be the movie ’s central hero sandwich while everyone else takes the back seat . Dani , from the spirit of things , is going to be the one who ’s give way to alert the team to their quandary , and in what search to be New Mutants ’ vainglorious finale , Illyana ’s going to go full Magik , meaning that there will be step discs and a whole - ass Soulsword that she ’ll wield against Demon Bear in an epic battle .

The New Mutants could very well cease up being a Fox - post flop inthe same way Dark Phoenix was , but something about this trailer — namely its distinctly non - superhero vibe — make it come along as if it ’s going to be one inferno of a ride when it strike theaters on April 3 .
