There are few things as soothing as desert C , the rough and spiky landscape painting shine over by a layer of frozen geek . That ’s precisely what happen this week in Joshua Tree National Park after an passing powerful storm ripped across the region .
To get C in this corner of the Mojave Desert , you need two things normally in short supply for the region : moth-eaten temperatures and downfall . The former is n’t super rare . The average low in Joshua Tree during the winter months dip to near freezing , and the share of the park in higher elevations get even cold . Precipitation , on the other hand , is tougher to see . The park averages a little less than 5.5 inches of hurriedness in a yr make it one of the driest places in the U.S. So , basically , getting Baron Snow of Leicester in Joshua Tree is like rolling snake eye .
And that ’s on the button what the weather deliver this week thanks to a strong low - insistence system drop out of the Gulf of Alaska . That allow for the requisite polar zephyr ( because Alaska ) and haste ( because gulf moisture ) to bring a sizeable serving of snow . The storm system set up clique off the Southern California coast and sent precipitation bands spiral inland .

The National Weather Service place just outside Joshua Tree immortalise 1.23 inch of precipitation over a 24 - minute geological period starting on Thursday into Friday , though it did n’t account snow totals . But TV and photos from in and around the ballpark show a sizeable blast of snow . Heavy flakes ensconce the park ’s namesake tree and cacti that dot the desert , softening the Flintstones - esque landscape painting into something that appear more like Frozen .

Elsewhere in Southern California , the weather was every bit idiotic . Barstow , California , set a December recordwith 1.76 inch of precipitation . In the high elevations of the San Bernardino Mountains , the snow totals were dead farcical with up to 36 in of snow fall there . And in Ventura , the National Weather Service isinvestigating a tornadothat touched down on Thursday .

The organisation has started to clear out of Southern California , but it ’s nowhere near done . Winter violent storm watches and warnings are up across parts of Arizona and New Mexico . Up to a infantry of snow could go down in the slew . Even depressed - elevation cities are under winter weather advisories include Tucson where the foothill could see up to three inches of snow . Ditto for Saguaro National Park where chances of snow are 100 percent , according to the National Weather Service , mean it could join Joshua Tree as another commons with snowfall in unearthly places .
