Castlevania is on its wayback to Netflix , with more bloody monsters to slay and more villainous scheming than you may judder a Belmont - approved whip at . But it faced a bit of a trouble for writer Warren Ellis : he ’d already killed off his scoundrel , recall there would n’t be a young season . So where does Castlevania go next ?
With the impending arriver of the third season of Frederator Studios and Powerhouse Animation’skickass celebrationof whippingvampsand good friend cursing the hell out of each other , io9 speak to Ellis — the lead author who has taken the mankind of Konami ’s dear sidescrolling activity game and plough it into a flaming , curse word - filled phantasy epic for Netflix for all three seasons — as well as Castlevania administrator producer Kevin Kolde about the response to the show ’s 2d season , and what ’s to amount for our heroes and villains likewise when the show returns .
Suffice to say : look Vlad ’s ladto be sad .

Castlevania‘s Vlad Tepes Is One of the Most Fascinating Takes on Dracula Around
io9 : Looking back at time of year two , the reaction to that when it come out was on another spirit level , even liken to the achiever of time of year one . With that heighten embrace of the show , was there a insistency total into time of year three to — I’m so sorry , I can not think of another way to say this — raise the stakes , as it were ?
Warren Ellis : HA ! Yeah , I see it come and I still laughed . [ uphold express mirth ] . Well … I did n’t see any of that . To this day , I ’m not sure if if anyone actually watched season two apart from a few of us . So there was no insistence on me , ‘ cos I experience in an absolute vacuum . I ’ve really got no estimate how season two was received — or , as I said , if anyone actually watched it ! The only pressure was the pressure I feel to struggle over with season three . And you make love , hope the three people who check season two control stick with it for another time of year . Kevin might have a unlike slant on it . He talks to multitude , I do n’t . They keep me in the basement .

SEASON THREE LET’S GO, INDEED.Image: Netflix
Kevin Kolde : Well , I ’m pretty much on the same pageboy ! I think we felt up the press based on the success of season two . It ’s been sort of swell to process the upheaval , that we ’re favourable to exercise with a great squad of people and just sort of live this stuff . It ’s not like there was [ pressure]—they were gung - ho . “ time of year three , allow ’s go . ” So yeah , not really .
io9 : One of the big things that happens in season two is that our torpedo confront the big badness , they go to Dracula ’s castle , they fight … and he ’s defeated . I do n’t really want to say “ dead ” because , well , Dracula , and you know how that change by reversal out . How does Dracula ’s current absence seizure , for want of a better word , linger over this Modern time of year ?
Ellis : Oh , well that was the antic , was n’t it ? Because I did n’t know we were go bad to get a season three . I thought , “ Well … shit , I better actually get the conclusion in season two ! ” And then Netflix asked for a third time of year , which was delicious . And surprising . And wonderful . And also one of those , “ Oh , shit ” moments that you always relish as a writer . That said , once we get the offer for time of year three , it come to me , because I had all those characters aside from Dracula and Lisa and Godbrand — god residuum Godbrand . I had all those characters in play across a whole clod of the cerebral hemisphere , really . And I feel like a lot of those characters still had a fortune of situation to go , and arcs that had been incomplete .

Isaac is the obvious one , in that , yeah — that was open - ended . There was a degree of culmination in the arc in season two for him , but not the whole individual . And it became clear to me that in an additional time of year , I could do something about the whole soul . So , the show now becomes very much about the stories generated out of the characters themselves . That initial engine is leave out , but now I ’ve got seven or eight locomotive that are just as crowing . And all those characters are equally as interesting to me as Dracula was .
Kolde : I think it ’s also the vacuity , right ? That allows those characters story to come to the forefront because Dracula is n’t there anymore — and how does that impact the sort of journey they ’re on ? So , he ’s not there but he ’s sort of very much there , in the motivating and background with what these character are doing .
io9 : One affair that was perhaps surprising to people coming into the 2d season was , the show sort of flipped the switch on its tempo and we got to spend a lot more time with the characters just talk to each other — there were a quite a little more graphic symbol - driven arc rather than necessarily the action that was such a major part of the first season . Now that you ’ve set out all these unlike “ engines ” going , what ’s the balance between that part focus and the natural process - side of Castlevania in season three ?

He may no longer be at Sypha and Trevor’s side, but Alucard has some new guests at Dracula’s castle.Image: Netflix
Kolde : It ’s always been interesting to balance — I cogitate time of year three serves both of those affair . We have ten episodes instead of eight , so we have more characters , and patently get to spend more time worry about those fibre , and understanding their journeying . That requires them to be able-bodied to talk ! Which , for me , was one of the best parts , actually , of season two , and now season three . I love the way that Warren writes these characters , and their dialogue is interesting . It ’s heavily in vivification because we do n’t have the performances on film , of the worker . We ’ve got their great outspoken performance , but we have to make that interesting from an animation standpoint — which is a citation to our theater director , Sam Deats and the unbelievable storyboard artists [ at Powerhouse ] . But I think it ’s a good balance , I ’ve always strive to have that residual . I think the action is n’t meaningful if we do n’t care about the character in their narration .

Ellis : Kevin saved it . My first reaction was , “ No , the balance is wholly fucked ! ” I ’m at the point I can see this understandably , and experience the things I did wrongly . But add to what Kevin said — and please disregard the premature condemnation — what we do have are these incredible actors , and the performances they ’ve given us have been so inventive and so rich that they have really made me go in Modern direction . And therefore , there is a great deal of character geographic expedition that really come in from things the actors did in their performances that was Modern , that was inventive — things that gave us something to think about . We do have the Castlevania activeness jell pieces . I always desire that — but my first line of notes was “ Season three is the psychedelic repulsion season . ” Psychedelic repulsion also bring with it some talking and philosophic prospect . It becomes intellectual , as well as worked up in its own way . I wish to cogitate of it mighty now as a richer , denser season than season two . Not least because we have a lot more move on and a lot more eccentric interacting , and we ’re introducing a mint more characters to interact with our late returning cast members .

The squad from Styria hatches a plan.Image: Netflix
Kolde : I do n’t retrieve anybody ’s going to be disappointed . If you ’re here for the action , I think you ’ll be very glad if you ’ve seen the trailer . If you ’re in it for the characters and the dandy performance , you ’re in for just as much of a dainty .
Ellis : I do reckon I ’ve got about half - a - dozen good gag in this one , as well .
io9 : At the terminal of the last season Sypha and Trevor split off from Alucard , and he continue back at his papa ’s former castling to languish in the grief of everything that ’s just transpired for him . So , while they ’re off doing their very cool - looking giant - track down material we ’ve seen in the laggard , what can you tease about Alucard this time of year ?

Ellis : Well , he ’s the star of the show . As ever , he ’s very attractively deplorable . He ’s beautifully sad in the castle . He ’s attractively deplorable by the river . He ’s beautifully sad in the woods . I stand for , you know . He ’s Alucard .
io9 : That ’s at least three sequence of story there .
Ellis : Well , you know , that ’s like — I’ve been decently there , likely . But he does get a couple of visitant ! He does get a young human and cleaning lady who assay him out because … I do n’t sleep together how much I can get into , but they have this history with lamia at home in northerly Japan . And they would care Alucard to teach them how to defend vampires . So he move from being part of the partnership in season two to being part of a mentorship in season three — which is kind of a big change for him . He must interact with people , which he ’s never been bully at . On the other mitt , he does n’t have anyone there call him a cockwart . So , it ’s all good for Alucard .

io9 : This time of year , there ’s a quite a little more of the villains to focus on — you touched on Isaac already , but Carmilla is off doing her own thing . What can you tell us about her journeying ?
Ellis : Well , as Kevin pointed out , there is now a major power vacuum in Eastern Europe . Dracula is gone . The night creatures have been scatter , the vampire ground forces is defeated . Big previous power vacuity . But where Carmilla comes from , Styria , has always been static because it ’s been feed by her and her three female lamia cohort . The four vampire sisters of Styria have bleed it for ages . It ’s terribly unchanging . But everything east of Styria is not . So Carmilla go through an chance — the possibility for strain her territory , I ’ll put it that way .
Kolde : Again , we get to meet her three vampire sisters which I cerebrate citizenry will really enjoy . Crazy characters voice by Yasmine Al Massri , Jessica Brown Findlay … so , I think citizenry are in for a dainty .

Ellis : Listening in to recording sessions , just listen to all four of them pop off at it together was awing . I want to say those sessions extend long just for the amount of laughter between the four of them . But yeah , the squad from Styria were quite a thing .
