In the second installment of our “ Reading Barsoom ” series , we dig into the swashbuckling curiosity of Edgar Rice Burroughs ’ first three Mars novels , A Princess of Mars , Gods of Mars , and Warlord of Mars .
The first book of Edgar Rice Burroughs ’s famous Mars series , A Princess of Mars , gets off to a creaky outset . A ungainly frame sequence explains how Burroughs got the story and John Carter ’s transition from an eery Arizona cave to Mars is downright clumsy . But once Carter discover himself on the bottom of a dried - up Martian ocean , things get down to cook nicely – especially for a 99 - year old book by a first - time novelist .
Carter is almost straight off enamor by a banding of immature man , Mars ’s 15 - foot , 4 - arm answer to the Mongolian swarm . But he finds his lesser sizing is more than offset by his increased metier and agility in Mars ’s less gravity . Carter ’s accomplishment with clenched fist and sword speedily make him social rank and respect .

Romance come in the picture when the green men capture Dejah Thoris , a humanoid red - skinned Martian . Not only is she a princess of Helium , one of the major red Martian city - states , she ’s totally hot , and , like all Martians , prone to running around naked . Carter falls like a Harlan Fisk Stone .
They make good their escape , but are separated . Dejah Thoris falls into the hand of Zodanga , a red Martian city at warfare with Helium . A Zodangan prince demands her helping hand in marriage as the Leontyne Price of peace . But the ceremonial ends in a bloodbath as John Carter leads an unprecedented coalition of fleeceable Martians and red Martians to sack the city .
Of course , Carter and Dejah Thoris are n’t destined to live happily ever after - yet . As they await the hatching of their first testicle ( Martians being oviparous ) , the ambience plant that preserve Mars ’s cutting aura breathable boodle . bunch are unable to force their elbow room into the impregnable construction . As oxygen runs out , John Carter realizes he alone has the mental Florida key to plant . He cannonball along to the plant and unlocks the doors . The last thing he sees before collapsing are gasping workers desperately crawling across the threshold . The novel end with Carter regain consciousness … in an eery Arizona cave .

Burroughs was the master of the cliff hanger .
By the fourth dimension Burroughs write idol of Mars the next yr , he ’d pick up a matter or two . No shilly - shallying around this meter . A few pages of introduction and Bang ! John Carter ’s back on Mars . Before he can even think , “ reckon like they limit the atm plant , ” he find himself steel in manus combat hordes of elephantine Martian ape and bizarre “ plant men ” at the side of Tars Tarkas , his beloved gullible Martian fellow - in - sleeve .
Carter shortly finds out he ’s in the Valley Dor , the Shangri - La of the Martian religious belief . Martian perform an end - of - life pilgrim’s journey to the valley look to find a nation of eternal “ making love and peace and sleep . ” In fact , those that are n’t killed and down by the vale ’s ravening fauna are enslaved by the therns , a race of white - skinned Martian priests . But ultimately , the joke ’s on the therns . The finish of the thern ’s pilgrim’s journey , the Temple of Issus , is evenly overrated . Thern pilgrims themselves meander up enslave by the First Born , a slipstream of contraband - skinned Martians . And Issus , the goddess they withstand so holy , is just an highly honest-to-god , poorly - tempered First Born charwoman .

John Carter manages to escape both the therns and the First Born , the latter after spark off a memorable slave rising in the prizefighter - style arena . But his return to Helium is far from exultant . Not only is he imprisoned for the hell of returning from the Valley Dor , he name that his beloved Dejah Thoris has been taken captive by the First Born !
Naturally , Carter escapes , raise an army , and returns to the Valley Dor with an aerial armada of some 10,000 ships along augment with his hallmark drove of green Martians for an extremely cool Armageddon - Martian aerial combat affect boarding parties and swords ! It ends with the therns and the First Born rout , the Temple of Issus endure ankle joint - deep in blood , and Issus herself snap limb - from limb by her one-time worshippers . But Issus has the last jape . She has Dejah Thoris imprisoned with two other women in the Temple of the Sun , a massive revolving chamber whose door only opens once a year . Just before the door closes for the year , Carter come across one woman lunge at Dejah Thoris with a tongue , while another hurl herself between . And Burroughs disingenuously leave John Carter - and his readers - dangling once more .
Warlord of Mars brings the trilogy to a satisfying termination . Several month after the last of Gods , Carter acquire on the tail of a dissident thern who love a hush-hush entryway into the Temple of the Sun . Alas , he is hold up by a series of Indiana Jones style hazards , including a bottomless cavity , a Chamber of Reptiles , and the inevitable professional fencer . The thern constitute upright his escape with Dejah Thoris as Carter stress to crash his fashion through a glass labyrinth .

Carter prosecute the thern and Dejah Thoris to the north pole . He traverses the impenetrable trash barrier through the fabled ( and odiferous ) Carrion Caves to chance himself in Okar , the Din Land of a forgotten race of yellow Martians . In a bit of déjà vu , the emperor of Okar is strain to pull Dejah Thoris to marry him . As Carter is captured and drag off to an imaginative destiny in something called “ The Pit of Plenty , ” Dejah Thoris lets her captors know the secret plan is far from over . “ survive there another military man who could fight his direction back and off across a warlike satellite , confront beast beasts and hordes of savage hands for the passion of a cleaning woman ? ”
No pit can be deep enough to accommodate such a man . Carter escapes and triggers yet another striver rebellion that coincide with the Helium navy get in a nick of fourth dimension . The novel terminate with John Carter back in Helium , reunify with Dejah Thoris and his Word Carthoris ( get it ? ) and proclaimed by the greatest leadership of Mars to be the “ the Warlord of Mars . ” Burroughs only forget one question unanswered : what can John Carter do for an encore ?
The response came in less than two old age by and by in Thuvia , Maid of Mars . line in for further installments in theReading Barsoomseries !
