At first blush , last night ’s Continuum did n’t seem like it was going to be anything especial : a clichéd “ intriguer drug ” storyline wrap up in with some gang warfare . But rather , it warp into a really fascinating look at the ways in which your memory can dally john on you — and how prison term travel can roll in the hay up your memory .

Spoilers ahead …

The idea of remembering came up in some really interesting ways throughout the storyline of “ Second intellection ” :

1 ) There ’s a new street drug called “ Flash , ” which is actually a major drug in 2077 . in the beginning developed to help Alzheimer ’s Disease patients , it allows you to re - experience a finicky memory with perfect clarity . ( Pretty much precisely like the drug inPagan Kennedy ’s brilliant novel Confessions of a Memory Eater . ) Kiera ’s kid sis was hooked on this drug , and basically choke because of it , and when Alec ’s friends take it , they ’re caught in a nasty car stroke . But later , when Alec decides he ’s still interested in trying “ Flash ” so he can re - experience his sire ’s demise and remember what his sire was trying to tell him , his friend warns that the drug might not in reality confront your actual memories — instead , it might give you idealized versions of your memory , or the variant you wish well were genuine . ( And then Alec employ it anyway , and apparently see to it that his female parent was talking to Jason , the weird initiate hombre from the future . And maybe this means Jason is in reality Alec ’s dad ? )

2 ) Meanwhile , the aforementioned Jason pick up up with Kiera and gives her maddeningly undefined warnings about “ freelancers ” from the time to come , who can travel back and forth and are either preserving the timeline or screwing it up . ( And the mysterious “ Escher , ” who guarantee for Kiera with the feds and is connected to the mega corporation called Piron , is a freelance “ of a different stripe . ” ) But most interestingly , Jason also warn Kiera that the longer she stays in the past times , the hard it gets for her to return to the future — because her presence in the past is apparently helping to change the timeline to the point where the world she came from will never come into existence . And Jason seems to suggest that eventually Kiera will arouse up one morning and her memories of her lifespan in the future will no longer seem actual to her . “ One day you ’re break down to waken up and just enquire if any of it ever go on , ” he say .

( To cite the Doctor , “ A man is the essence of his memory , a Time Lord even more so . ” )

3 ) And then there ’s the “ gang warfare , ” which is really a power battle between the former buff Travis and Sonya . And , as a series of scene between Sonya and Lucas makes unmortgaged , what ’s really at post here is everybody ’s computer storage of Kagame , their stagnant leader . What did Kagame really endure for , and what did he need them to do after his death ? Sonya ’s only been Kagame ’s chosen successor for a short clock time , but she already seems uncertain — she made an alignment with one of the street gangs , but now she seems to experience like that was a regretful decision . She ’s using wildness to achieve her goals ( much like Kagame did , on several occasion ) but now she ’s rewrite history to say that Kagame conceive in the exponent of idea and shunned the utilisation of force . It ’s actually kind of jarring in a few of those scene to see how much denial Sonya seems to be in about Liber8 ’s past action , and I ’m not entirely certain I buy that she would be that naïve . Lucas has to keep reminding her of how much death they ’ve bring down thus far , and how poorly things turned out for Kagame when he sample to be pacifist — something Lucas says Travis has understood all along . Meanwhile , Travis casually slaughters a long ton of gangsters , heating up the bunch war , and then ends it by cutting off the gangs at their heads . Literally . The episode ends with Sonya having choose to divorce herself from the reprehensible element , while Travis has become the drawing card of a newfangled unified Vancouver syndicate — bear witness that the two of them have taken very different lesson from Kagame ’s bequest .

Oh , and in the heart of all this gang fight , Kiera proves she ’s really the worst cop ever . They find the drug science laboratory where Sonya is contact with her gangster friend , and Kiera turn away to wait for backup , lest Sonya get aside . Thus setting off a huge shoot - out between her and Carlos , on one side , and a ton of gangbangers on the other . It ’s sort of a miracle that Carlos does n’t get perforate or botch up up , due to Kiera ’s mad hot - headedness .

And meanwhile , the two half - brother , Alec and Julian , keep lurching towards becoming the people they are in 2077 , and neither of them seems alone certain they require to action those destinies . ( I guess Julian still does n’t know he ’s been sell with time traveller . ) Both of them are beleaguer by people who desire something from them , and they both seem to experience like pawns instead of the king they ’re think to become .

In one of the episode ’s most fascinating scenes , Julian gets a visit from their mummy , who seems moderately stoked about the bombing that Julian ostensibly took part in — because the bombing had the consequence of uncovering a shady deal the major pharmaceutic companionship were defecate , to crush therapeutic for major disease to boost their win . * The head of the big drug company company were all there , a fact which the society kept denying until the executives ’ life insurance policy policies were yield out . Of course , a lot of innocent people had to become flat to reveal and thwart that scam .

Julian say he ’s going to figure all of this out , and seems kind of well-chosen to be sequestrate in prison where he can do lots of intellection — but meanwhile , different shuddery bunch people keep come up to him and denote that they ’re his raw protector angels , courtesy of Sonya or Travis .

And Alec still has n’t decided whether he ’s going to signalise up with Kellog , who tells Kiera he does n’t actually want to exchange Alec ’s monumental luck — he just wants a ringside seat butt . Kiera and Alec have a argument over the ethical code of sleep together up an 18 - yr - old ’s life , when that same cat screwed up their aliveness as an 80 - class - older . But it ’s Alec himself who gets to the heart of the outcome : Kiera may know how Alec is supposed to turn out , free-base on the future she come from , but Alec still might want to take some detours along the way . And if Alec does wind up changing the future , then at least he ’s exercising his free will — and if they do n’t have gratuitous will , then what ’s the point of any of this ?

Free will , of row , only matters if you have something worth prefer . And that , in turn of events , requires being able to count on your memories of the past — or in Kiera ’s suit , the future . If Alec exerts his free will too much , then Kiera ’s whole liveliness could be changed .

  • Yes , I know this make almost no sense . curative for major disease would be super profitable , even if you only get to cure hoi polloi once .
